On Location: Born-Free 14

Born-Free is the largest and most prestigious chopper show in North America. Custom motorcycles of all kinds show up, but the emphasis is on vintage and vintage-inspired choppers. 26 invited builders highlight this 14th edition of the show. They had 8 months to create something wild. Just being invited is accomplishment enough, while a few will receive additional honors such as best Panhead, best Knucklehead, and best in show. Born-Free 14 was held on June 24-25 in Silverado Canyon, Orange County, California.

This recap wouldn't be possible without the support of Throttle Addiction. Check out their selection of 1,000+ chopper parts, their 90-day return policy and free shipping on orders over $99: https://www.throttleaddiction.com/

On location: The National Motorcycle Museum

The National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa, is closing on September 5th, 2023. We traveled to Iowa to tour the museum and capture the impressive collection before it is actioned off and pieced out to new owners. The bulk of the museum was curated by the founders of J&P Cycles, John and Jill Parham. At the time of our visit, the museum housed more than 300 vintage and important motorcycles and more than 6,000 pieces of road art. The museum has brought joy to thousands of enthusiasts and is a testament to John and Jill Parham's contributions to the motorcycling community. We were lucky enough to spend three days in town and still weren't able to see it all. We learned a ton and felt blessed that we were able to experience so much history in one place.

The museum is closing for financial reasons. With the relocation of J&P Cycles from Anamosa to Texas, the amount of visitors to the small community of about 5,000 people hasn't been enough to maintain and house such a large and significant collection. While it's sad that the museum is closing, we can't thank the founders and staff enough for providing an incredible experience to so many riders for as long as they did.

A huge thank you to Jill Parham and Dave Ohrt for welcoming us to the museum and taking the time to chat with us. And another thank you to the staff members who helped us navigate the collection.

On Location: The David Mann Chopperfest

The David Mann Chopperfest is one of the premiere chopper shows in the United States. The event is held in honor of legendary biker artist David Mann and brings hundreds of custom motorcycles and kustom kulture artists to the California coast each winter. This recap film covers the 17th edition of the festival, held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on Sunday February 12th, 2023. Thank you to Rets Riding Glasses for sponsoring our coverage of the event.

Our recap video contains nearly two hours of footage of the best Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovelheads, Triumphs, Evolution Big Twins, Sportster choppers, and many many more. We also interviewed some talented builders and artists to dig deeper into some of the stories behind these bikes.

The David Mann Chopperfest pays tribute to the brilliant artist who continues to inspire so many bike builders to this day, and is named in his honor. Tragically, the chopper community recently lost another influential member in David "Huggy Bear" Hansen(right). David founded David Mann Chopperfest 17 years ago and has been organizing the event ever since. He also owned and ran The Shop in Ventura, which has been a staple in the vintage bike scene for 50 years. We were lucky enough to speak with David Hansen and his son Tory while we filmed this video back in February. Our video is dedicated to David's memory and we thank him for his numerous contributions to the culture we all enjoy so much.

Almost there!

When my boss started talking about the new Born-Free video, he said it would hit over 100k views. Honestly, I thought he was aiming a bit high, but it seems he was right, yeah I said it, I was wrong he was right. We just rolled 91k and it's still climbing. Here's to reaching 100k views and more. Cheers!

Check out our Born-Free 13 video

The Born-Free custom motorcycle show is known world-wide for good reason. More than 30 elite bike builders grind it out in their garages for months, prepping their best work for this show. At stake is the notoriety of being declared the best-of-the-best. A few coveted spots at the 30th Mooneyes Hot Rod Custom show in Yokohama, Japan also sweeten the pot. We took our time filming each of these insane bikes, so you can drink in all the sweet details from the comfort of your couch. The night before Born-Free is another fierce battle between bike builders.

The Biltwell People's Champ competition is held at the legendary Cook's Corner bike bar, a few miles down the road from Born-Free. 6 finalists from a pool of hundreds ride their choppers to the show for a shot at ten grand and a place at Born-Free with the invited builders. We made sure to shoot all of their bikes as well. Not to be forgotten, are the hundreds of ride-ins, vendor bikes, and special guests. We couldn't include all of these, but we threw in a couple we know you'll dig.

Big thanks to Throttle Addiction for sponsoring this video!

Enjoy the video, check out the forum, and buy some merch, so we can keep making cool stuff for y'all.

Schwinn Sting-ray inspired Motorcycle | 1978 Yamaha XS650 by Motorelic

One of the most recognizable bicycles of all time just hit its growth spurt thanks to Sean Skinner at Motorelic. Sean started this project back in 2016 by creating a custom frame. Then he found a re-phased 1978 Yamaha XS650 engine and went from there. We caught up with him at Mama Tried 2022 to get a closer look at the finished product.
